The many careers of negative polarity items

چکیده

Negative polarity items are characterized by their restriction to negative contexts. Ladusaw (1979) proposed that for the most-discussed negative polarity items (NPIs), licensing contexts have to observe the semantic property of being downward entailing (see de Swart 1998, for an accessible introduction). According to a competing analysis, at least some NPIs undergo scalar licensing (Fauconnier 1975). While scalar approaches to NPI licensing have gained in popularity in recent years, there are undoubtedly many NPIs to which the approach cannot be applied. In the present article, I will take a diachronic perspective to discuss the function of scalar NPI licensing for various sub-classes of NPIs as well as for negative polarity sensitivity in general. The scalar analysis of NPI licensing can derive the restriction to downward entailing contexts as an epiphenomenon of independent pragmatic mechanisms which are each attested independently: the capacity to evoke alternatives (ALT) and a scalar interpretation of alternatives

A Multilingual Database of Polarity Items

This paper presents three electronic collections of polarity items: (i) negative polarity items in Romanian, (ii) negative polarity items in German, and (iii) positive polarity items in German. The presented collections are a part of a linguistic resource on lexical units with highly idiosyncratic occurrence patterns. The motivation for collecting and documenting polarity items was to provide a...

Processing polarity: ERP evidence for differences between positive and negative polarity.

The goal of the present study was to investigate event-related potential (ERP) responses to Dutch negative and positive polarity adverbs of degree presented in licensed and unlicensed contexts with negative and affirmative particles directly preceding the polarity item. To control for effects of the processing of negation as such, neutral adverbs were also presented in negative and affirmative ...

Because clauses and negative polarity licensing

In this paper, I investigate the interaction of clause-modifying adjuncts, such as because clauses, with negation and the licensing of negative polarity items. I show how an account in which because clauses are adjuncts which can be basegenerated adjoined to either IP or VP explains the ambiguity of examples containing because clauses and negation, and how, in conjunction with the roofing theor...

On the semantic status of n-words in Catalan and Spanish

This paper provides some arguments for the claim that Catalan and Spanish n-words are not lexically ambiguous. I put forward the hypothesis that Catalan and Spanish nwords are negative expressions and numeral weak quantifiers. I suggest the relevance of a hierarchy of negative items (negative quantifiers, minimizers, nwords, and polarity items), determined by the position of these items within ...

Japanese Negative Polarity Items and Negative Concord

Negative polarity items (NPIs) are a class of expressions whose distribution is restricted to affective contexts, especially to the negative context (Kato (1985)).
